Discussion of various dimensions of economic security—such as supply chain resilience, energy security, and cybersecurity—has intensified in recent years. These discussions are typically conducted in separate forums, yet they are closely interlinked. In order to clarify these interconnections and strengthen synergies among different expert communities, the Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD), as part of its New Approaches to Economic Challenges (NAEC) work programe , convened a workshop entitled “Economic Aspects of National Security” in February 2024.
The purpose of this report is to extend the discussion and provide further insights into the key themes raised during the workshop. The report draws on the expertise of the OECD Secretariat and the International Energy Agency. It examines specific aspects of economic security in the context of heightened geopolitical tensions, increased interconnectedness resulting from globalization, and ongoing green and digital transitions. By focusing on these emerging issues, the report seeks to offer insights that support informed policymaking and strategic responses aimed at ensuring economic stability and resilience in an ever-changing global environment.
