Data ending in Tir 1405 (July 2026) shows an inflation gap between different provinces of the country. The inflation rate in Tehran province is consistently lower than the national average. In fact, the annual inflation for Tehran households in Tir 1405 was 55.2%, which is 10.8 percentage points lower than the 66% national average. Accordingly, Tehran province has experienced the lowest annual inflation rate among all provinces for the sixth consecutive month. Furthermore, Tehran has had the lowest point-to-point inflation rate compared to other provinces for the tenth consecutive month. Now, the question is: what is the reason for this difference?
One of the main reasons is the share and weight of each item in the household consumption basket across different provinces. The difference in the importance of two major groups, "food, beverages, and tobacco" and "non-food goods and services", across provinces and expense deciles reveals that the share of food, beverages, and tobacco in Tehran households' expenses was the lowest in the country at 21.91%. In contrast, in provinces like Ilam, with a weight of 39.86%, a larger portion of household income is spent on purchasing food, beverages, and tobacco. Since the annual inflation rate for the food group has been high in recent months, lower-income provinces and lower deciles, such as the first decile, which spends 42.4% of its budget on food, beverages, and tobacco, have experienced higher inflation.
